a) watch the trailer to the forthcoming series (3) of Westworld and name as many buildings/locations (architect, year, etc.) as possible...

1.) Santiago Calatrava - City of Arts and Sciences [Valencia]

2.) Ricardo Bofill - Cement works factory [Barcelona]

b) write a blog entry on a contemporary architectural polemic of your choice (can just be the discussion board question you sent me over the break)

What is the architect's role beyond providing functional and aesthetical spaces?

Architect is a person appointed by the client, who develops a facility as per the design concept and the requirements specified by the client. The architects develop design that are more creative in aesthetics. The architect makes use of vision and creative ideas to satisfy the client. But the design evolved by the architects have to satisfy with the building laws and the regulations of the state.
An architect both artistic and functional mind for the design of structures. Once an architect is approached by a client or a sponsor, he calls a meeting to know the needs and the wants of the construction work or project.

The role of an architect ensures that the structures are both artistic and functional. Architects are task to design spaces that are creative and functional, from concept to the full realisation of the design. However, does the architect's job stop at providing these aesthetical and functional spaces? If we looked towards sustainability, every construction that we do has a consequence on the environment. Rather than feeding the ego of creating monumental designs, should the focus of the architect shift towards creating a more eco-friendly environment?

Everyone has their own personal interest. Peter Zumthor looks to create an experiential journey through his works. His architecture explores the phenomenological senses which targets more than just the visuals. In order to do so, material selection and harmony between them is vital part of his process. He would need to have a vast knowledge about materiality and ways that he can explore them. The overall process makes up his purpose in architecture, his desires to create meaningful spaces for people.

From the groupwork discussion, Amin Taha seemed to be quite invested in expressing the story of a place. The building that expresses time and culture which is uniquely different from others. For Taha, it may not be the aesthetics that are important for him but the story that comes behind creating architecture.

For me, I want to create spaces that offers more than just the visual and practical sense. I'd like to play with spaces that starts to create an awareness within the users. Architecture beyond the eyes of an architect is a backdrop for daily lives, whether it obstructs or assists with day to day activities, most time, it disappears behind the busy lives of the people. I want to create spaces that offers a meaningful experience, something that breaks the monotony of a repetitive lifestyle. Architecture can be can be a statement that doesn't have to be bold and loud like Gehry's works. Perhaps this line of thought aligns more towards phenomenology, to create spaces that directly touches on the human senses. Maybe its architecture in a sculptural sense, much like Richard Serra's disconcerting sculptural pieces through asymmetry. RCR's Bell-Lloc winery utilised the same concept that offsets the body's balance due to its confusing proportions. I think it would be really fun to create works like these.
