Three follies were placed within Sector 100 as an urban gesture to activate/ reinforce social activities within its sited region.
See blog - SITE ANALYSIS =) for siting the follies.
Seemingly functionless, stereotomic ornaments play with light and bring attention to selective views. These follies take up soft functions that relate to the general activities around where they sit: Delight (Food), Contemplation (Chapel), Expression (Graduation field). Through random explorations we set up the opportunity for chance encounter.

FOLLY - DELIGHT
Delight was designed to be sited on the lawn near the Albert barrack walls. Through taking advantage of the current cultural activities (VEGAN LUNCH/ MEAT CLUB/ VEDA CLUB) occurring on site, Delight functions as a shelter for users to enjoy their lunch under.
Delight is orientated parallel to the barrack walls in order to frame and focus the user's attention to it's presence.
FOLLY - CONTEMPLATION
Contemplation is sited near the Maclaurin chapel and serves as a shelter for people to meditate under. A skylight and windows are carved into the stereotomic structure to admit light and frame the Macluarin chapel.
The north-west entrance of Contemplation is met with a set of stairs due to it's sited topography.
FOLLY - EXPRESSION
Tucked away behind the graduation lawn, Expression is a pavilion for artist's to exhibit their works. The Expression folly looks to activate the lawn which is quiet throughout the year without disrupting it during its formal use during graduation time. The large face opens to the lawn as a chance for an artist to express him/herself.

Contemplation - 3D print + Silicone Mould (Unsuccessful)

From the 3D models, I printed the follies in wood PLA, hoping it might pick up some grain textures. In the moment render, I textured the folly's interior walls with wood formwork. The expressed wood texture pays homage to the earlier settlement building which was built in wood. The colour of the follies is dyed in pink which brings it back to the materiality of the digital library.
I worked with Splicer to create an mdf version of the negative spaces of the folly. Due to the scale of the follies, splicer would reduce the details of the folly, so I went for a 3D print instead.
Contemplation was by far the hardest folly to work with, I tried to figure out how to cast it and make the form work. Regardless, it would've required to be casted in parts and assemble it together. I casted the 3d print hoping the silicone would be soft enough to pull it out from the nooks and crannies of Contemplation. However, the grain from the 3d print gripped onto the silicone, making it really difficult to remove and eventually broke the more fragile parts of the model.
The other two follies was easier to work with, but I didn't manage to capture the roof because of time. I tried sanding down a bit of the roof but it was too time consuming because workshop was closed in the weekend.
I casted two versions of each folly to test the colours mixture and textures from the PLA material. The folly was stained blue unexpectedly from the masking tape used to make the cast-box. It was a happy accident.
