MOMENT DRAWINGS IN FRAGMENTS AND IMAGINATION

THE RAW STATE BY AUTHOR + ETHAN C.

The image illustrated above presents moments during the discussion where we drew our imaginations out to communicate with one another. These ideas are understood momentarily but only to members present at the time, beyond it, without context, it is undecipherable. Good luck reading it, but you can start to see stick figures emerge on chairs and benches if you look closely. The map was placed on initially to give us a sense of the site to think in context.

Currently we discussed the logistics and functions of spaces that would be included in our library.

Central service towers called "rotini" (yes the pasta, it was inspired by the pasta), the service tower will host the reception, as well as the digital tablet shelf and digital screens exhibiting some sort of learning. Surrounding that central tower would be a large spiral stairwell that acts as a social gathering space for people to sit down and read or hang out. ( https://www.dezeen.com/2013/10/20/special-feature-stairs-you-can-sit-on/ ) The rotini will act as the organiser between the various functional spaces that will go inside our library. Currently, we are looking to place 3 rotini towers (this figure may increase to 4 or 5 depending on its size) on site disregarding the unitary plan.

There was some controversy within the group on whether to retain the digiverse library which has now been renamed to "inter-net". The final consensus is to retain it, as the possibility to critically explore the limits of a library through people's web personals.

Elaborating on this: people tend to behave different on net, some are more outspoken than they normally are in real life. The net based library would overcome the intimidating face-to-face interactive boundary which a lot of us feel uncomfortable with. To supplement this thought, we have a lot of trolls in the internet, through games, reddit, social media platforms etc because of the use of an avatar. Perhaps using this as a catalyst, can we push the boundaries of learning through this interaction, people would be more inclined to ask questions where they might feel pressured to be laughed at etc. Apart from this line of thought, of course, the more obvious limitless boundaries of the internet and what it can achieve. Lots of room and potential to explore. However, this will be third on our priority list, 1st being the physical library (which should not rely on the digital one, digital library only supplements this concept), 2nd being the follies/pavilions which extends the boundaries of the library beyond its current site. The follies allows the library to extend throughout the campus and connect/open learning for everyone in all faculties.(potentially public too) We began to touch on the idea of specialised follies, in respect to certain faculty like music or arts, whereby the functions of a makerspace from the library extends out to these follies as well. But in the case of music, perhaps instruments? scribes? pavilion to exhibit music?

Apart from the rotini, we got hungry and thought about conchiglioni too. This pasta supplements the digital library idea as potentially a pod that a user rests in (lying down in like a recliner kind of position) and connects to the digiverse/inter-net. The conchiglioni doesn't necessarily have to be for inter-net use too, could be a place for resting etc. These conchiglioni will be spread around the library in a non-logical format, kind of like a hide and seek type of thing. They will be situated in groups of 2-5 and mostly like be secondary to service spaces.

We also touched on foreseen and unforeseen social spaces. The foreseen social spaces would be functional spaces such as a makerspace, where users are expected to interact with one another based on an activity. An unforeseen social space is service spaces or public spaces where social interactions occur beyond our expectations. These interactions can be predicted to a certain degree, the design interactions in these spaces would be gestures to encourage these sort of interactions.

Supplementing service spaces, we thought it would be good to include a bar-style table top along the edges of the rotini or even through hallways as a place for private study. This gesture accommodates room for those who'd like to perform individual study but are not encouraged for quiet study because there's the gen library to do that.

A discussion also came up through the digital alternative of this space, whereby an avatar user would be more inclined to ask help from someone working nearby than they would do in real life.

We touched on the makerspace that runs along the lines of a studio like fabrication place. Different disciplinary may potentially have different makerspaces. Engineers might have robotics like makerspaces while architects would have 3D printers and lasercutters. Of course, these places are open to all and encourages people to engage with one another and work with one another through a studio styled environment.

Something that we wanted to keep consistent from the original scheme is little moments of courtyard spaces that occurs throughout the library. Which brings oneself back to nature and potentially as an unforeseen studying space.

ok i sleep now, to be updated
